Island Air extends waive change fee period due to Hurricane Lester

Island Air has extended the travel period for customers needing to change their travel plans due to Hurricane Lester. Effective immediately, customers ticketed for travel on Island Air from August 31, 2016 through September 4, 2016 will be permitted to change their reservations without charge to ticketed flights through September 10, 2016.

Tropical Storm Madeline weakening, Tropical Storm Warning continues

Madeline’s maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Steady weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Madeline is expected to weaken to a Tropical Depression by Friday.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is closing state forest and park areas on the islands of Hawaii and Maui, in anticipation of the effects of Hurricane Madeline.
 
DLNR is asking for the public’s cooperation with this announcement of area closures as the storm approaches.  Additional closures may follow over the week, and updates will be provided to news media and on the department’s website.

All UH facilities on Hawaiʻi Island will be closed Wednesday in advance of Hurricane Madeline. Hawaii public schools on Hawaii Island will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday, Sept. 1. Many private schools are also closed.

The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this afternoon of Wednesday (Aug 24).

Deep tropical moisture will continue to produce heavy downpours and a chance of thunderstorms through late this afternoon. With streams remaining elevated and the ground already saturated from recent heavy rains in many areas there will be an elevated risk for flash flooding.

Flood advisory extended for Hawaii Island, roadway closures due to flooding/landslides

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 7:45 p.m. Tuesday (Oct 6). At 4:50 p.m. weather radar showed persistent rain that will cause minor flooding from Volcano to South Point. The weather radar showed rain falling at up to one inch per hour.
