HVNP Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium to temporarily close for electrical work

Temporary closure of National park steam vents parking lot March 14 for little fire ant treatment

The Steam Vents parking lot in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will be closed Thurs., March 14 from 8 a.m. to noon for the treatment of invasive little fire ants (LFA).   In late 2018, park scientists made the unwelcome discovery of LFAs in the park.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park reopens two trails and Mauna Loa Road

Two trails have reopened in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park after being closed last year due to impacts from tens of thousands of earthquakes that also damaged roads, buildings and other park infrastructure.

Partial shutdown of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park services during government shutdown

During the shutdown of the federal government due to a lapse of appropriations, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will remain as accessible as possible while still following all applicable laws and procedures. Some park roads, trails, and viewpoints in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will remain accessible to visitors, but emergency and rescue services will be limited.

Mauna Loa Road closed due to very high fire danger

Due to very high fire danger on Mauna Loa, park officials have closed Mauna Loa Road at the gate near Kīpukapuaulu parking area until further notice. Non-motorized day use such as hiking and bicycling will be permitted, and backcountry camping on Mauna Loa is allowed with a permit.
