HELCO reports power outages due to the earthquakes on Hawaii Island

At around 12:30 p.m. Friday (May 4) about 14,000 customers in Hilo, Kaumana, and pockets in Puna lost power due to the strong earthquake. Currently, about half of the customers have been restored and about 6,300 remain without power. Hawaii Electric Light Company crews are working to restore power.

One lane was closed on Mamalahoa Hwy in Ka‘u, downed power line also caused power outage

Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) reports a downed power line on Mamalahoa Highway south (Route 11) between the 59 and 60 mile markers. Hawaii Police reports both lanes now open to traffic. HELCO crews are still on scene so drive cautiously.

Rolling power outages due to lack of generation capacity on Hawaii Island

Hawai‘i Electric Light is asking Hawai‘i Island customers to conserve electricity use this evening (especially between 6-8 p.m.) due to the unavailability of three major generators. Rolling outages are occuring on Hawaii Island to distribute the shortfall of power.

Hawaii Electric Light Company advises customers of a power outage affecting all of the Honomu area tonight, Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 11:00 p.m. to approximately 5:00 a.m. Thursday morning, to allow HELCO personnel to safely perform emergency overhead line repairs.

High winds lead to power outages, HELCO advises customers as winds continue

High winds impacted HELCO’s system this week, causing trees, branches and other objects to contact power lines. Various areas of the Big Island has been affected, including Waikoloa, Kawaihae, Lalamilo, Ahualoa, Kukuihaele, Papaaloa, Puna, and other locations.

Downed utility pole and lines shut down highway, leaves Waimea residents without power

Police shut down Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) at Lindsey Road in Waimea so crews could make repairs to a utility pole and lines which came down Sunday afternoon. Police report that as of 7:38 a.m. Monday Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) at Lindsey Road is now open to through traffic in Waimea.

We recommend that refrigerators and freezers be opened only when absolutely necessary. If refrigeration or medical needs are critical, other arrangements should be made.

Do not use metal ladders or poles near power lines. Keep any ladders, poles or tie lines  that are used to set up fireworks at least 10 feet away from power lines. Overhead  power lines are energized and could be dangerous.
