Big Island police are investigating an attempted robbery Monday night in downtown Hilo. 

A 14-year-old girl was reportedly accosted at the Moʻoheau bus terminal between 11:45 p.m. and 11:55 p.m. by a young man who brandished an edged weapon and demanded her purse.

The Hawai`i Board of Education (BOE) heard two appeals Tuesday (Jan 17) brought by Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School (LCPCS) that challenged the actions of the Charter School Review Panel (CSRP). The Panel had denied an amendment to the school’s implementation plan and proposed delaying the opening of the school by a year.

Big Island police are investigating a body found in Puna as a coroner's inquest. 

Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday (January 17), a county lifeguard reported finding a partially submerged male body near the shoreline in the vicinity of Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki. The unidentified man appeared to be in his 50s.

During the week of January 9, 2012, through January 15, 2012, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21. 

So far this year, there have been 58 DUI arrests compared with 52 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.5 percent.

Big Island police have located 35-year-old Van Tu, who was wanted on a bench warrant for contempt of court and for questioning in connection with a theft investigation.

Tu was located Friday in Hāmākua and arrested and charged on the bench warrant. He was also arrested for theft and later released on that offense pending further investigation.

Waimea man charged with manslaughter in death of three year-old girl

On Friday night (January 13) Fire/Rescue personnel responded to a report of a 3-year-old girl who was found at home unconscious with labored breathing. They took her to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital, where doctors also discovered suspicious bruising on her body and notified police.

With more than 6,000 people behind bars in Hawai'i, the state’s prison system is over capacity and requires anywhere from one quarter to one third of prisoners to be housed in mainland prisons. But, the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center projects that the policy changes recommended in the plan would drastically reduce the need for costly out-of-state prison beds, saving the state as much as $150 million over five years.
