Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 10:43 a.m. alarm Tuesday (Oct 3) to the Papaaloa Road and Oshiro Camp Road intersection for a brush fire in Laupahoehoe.

Crews found a brushfire in vacant land buring 10-12 foot tall grass. The fire rapidly spread due to gusty trade winds at 25-35 mph. By 12:30 p.m. the fire was under control and had burned about 20 acres.

Hawaii County fire crews responded to a 7:59 p.m. alarm Saturday (July 25) to 36-2679 Mamalahoa Highway in Laupahoehoe for a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a three bedroom home engulfed in flames. Crews had the fire under control by 8:30 p.m. and the blaze was declared out at 9:15 p.m.

There were no occupants in the home and there were no injuries reported.

A 23-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle crash along the Hāmākua Coast on June 19.

Michael T. Moore of Laupāhoehoe was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday (July 1). The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
