Both the Women’s and Mixed crews raced together first on the 10 mile course, which ran north from Anaehoomalu Bay then turned and went south to “Lone Palm” Point, and returned into the wind to finish at Anaehoomalu Bay, fronting the Waikoloa Canoe Club.

Detour through Hilo Bayfront Beach Park extends hours

The detour around the Kamehameha Avenue/Pauahi Street intersection roadwork has new hours during weekdays. The detour enters Bayfront Highway via Hilo Bayfront Beach Park (also known as Bayfront Highway canoe area). The new hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays but will be closed on holidays.

Hawaiʻi Island police remind the public that the law allows service animals into businesses and other public places where pets are not allowed. These service animals are described as any guide, signal or service dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability.

Police seek owner of box found in Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the owner of a box with contents that was turned in to police as found property on August 24. The box was discovered in a parking lot on Anela Street in South Hilo and has a distinctive illustration on the cover.

Average gas prices in Hawaii rise 0.8 cents per gallon the past week

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.30/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Very strong 7.0M earthquake in Peru, no tsunami threat to Hawaii

No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.
