A Winter storm warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Friday (Feb 22) for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet.

Flood advisory issued for Hilo and Puna areas

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 11:15 p.m. Thursday (Feb 21). At 8:06 p.m. weather radar showed widespread showers with locallyt heavy rainfall over parts of the Hilo and Puna districts of the Big Island. Additional heavy showers are moving onshore from the East.

Kailua-Kona woman apparently drowns near Kailua Pier Wednesday (Feb 20)

A 67-year-old Kona woman apparently drowned Wednesday (February 20) in waters near the Kailua Pier. She was identified as Nga Angie Prieto of Kailua-Kona. In response to a 9:30 a.m. call of a possible drowning, officers determined that a woman swimming near buoy No. 3 had discovered Prieto floating face down and unresponsive.

DUI stats for the week of February 11-17, 2013

During the week of February 11, 2013, through February 17, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. So far this year, there have been147 DUI arrests compared with 183 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.7 percent.
