Big Island police have located 18-year-old Nicole Bennett of Hilo who was reported missing. She was found in Hilo unharmed Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the High Surf Advisory for Kona until 6 p.m. Thursday (Jan 12).

Surf is forecast to reach six to 10 feet in height along West facing shores of the Kona coast. Beachgoers are advised to be cautious of dangerous rip currents and wave run-up along low lying shoreline areas.

Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) has announced that at approximately 5 p.m. an outage occurred on Middle Keei Road in Kona affecting 130 customers. The outage was caused by a motor vehicle crash that brought down one 40' pole as well as damaging a guy pole and two spans of conductors. Hawaiian Tel and Oceanic Cable services were also affected.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will join all 397 national park units across the country in waiving entrance fees Jan. 14-16 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Entrance fees will also be waived on Sat., Jan. 21 to honor the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s 100-year anniversary and Open House.

An autopsy has determined that 48-year-old Bonifacio Pako Alip III of Kailua-Kona died from a medical condition and not from a one-vehicle crash on Route 11 in South Kona on November 8.

The Big Island's fatality count for 2011 has been reduced from 23 to 22.
