Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an incident involving the theft of several handguns from a shipping container in the Hāmākua District.

On Tuesday (August 8), police were called to a vacant Paʻauilo Mauka Road property after a caretaker noticed that a door on the shipping container was pried opened. In addition to a red portable Honda generator, the victim, a 78-year-old Alaska man, told police that several collectible Smith & Wesson, Colt and AMT revolvers and semi-automatic pistols were taken from the container.

Two burglaries have been reported on Old Mamalahoa Highway near Awapuhi Place.

The first burglary was reported on Monday (August 7), when a residence was broken into through the kitchen door. Suspects removed 67 boxes of Pergo XP curly koa laminate flooring.

During the week of July 31- August 6, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 689 DUI arrests compared with 635 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.5 percent.

Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested a 21-year-old Hilo man in connection with the theft of a county bus.

Police responded to a 1:47 p.m., report on (August 5), of a hit-and-run traffic accident on Railroad Avenue in Hilo involving a Hawaiʻi County mass transit bus that fled the scene. No one was injured in the incident. At 2:36 p.m., police were told that the bus was stolen from the County’s Hilo base-yard sometime early Saturday morning.
