Paauilo emergency water restriction Monday (Feb 11)

Due to equipment failure, an Emergency Water Restriction is issued for the Paʻauilo area. Customers should restrict water usage to health and safety needs only (drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes only). Irrigation activities should cease. Water is currently being hauled to meet the community’s needs; please kōkua and limit water usage.

A 37-year-old Papaaloa woman died following a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon, (December 2), in Paauilo. She was identified as Lori Ann Sato.

Responding to a 3:58 p.m., call, police determined that a 2004 Honda sedan was traveling northbound on Highway 19, near the 34-mile marker, overtaking a vehicle in a no passing zone and was broadsided by a 1999 Toyota pickup that was traveling southbound.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an incident involving the theft of several handguns from a shipping container in the Hāmākua District.

On Tuesday (August 8), police were called to a vacant Paʻauilo Mauka Road property after a caretaker noticed that a door on the shipping container was pried opened. In addition to a red portable Honda generator, the victim, a 78-year-old Alaska man, told police that several collectible Smith & Wesson, Colt and AMT revolvers and semi-automatic pistols were taken from the container.

Police identify Paauilo man killed in crash, traffic fatality rate doubles

Police have identified the man who died from injuries sustained in the 3-vehicle crash Wednesday (June 7) on Highway 19 near the 37-mile marker in Paʻauilo. He was identified as 32-year-old Jacob De Jesus of Paʻauilo. This is the 20th traffic fatality this year compared with 10 at this time last year.

The Waika’alulu Bridge No.44-5 located on Pa‘auilo Mauka Road (between Ho’okahua Road and Kukuipapa Road) that is scheduled to be closed for repair work between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., now requires a 24-hour closure beginning on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 through Friday, March 10, 2017.

Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 16-year-old Paʻauilo boy who was reported missing. Benjamin Zindric was last seen in the Waikululu area of Paʻauilo on December 30. He is described as 5-foot-11, 158 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He may be in the in the company of a friend named “J.J.”
