Police are searching for a Puna man reported missing

Hawaiʻi Island police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 67-year-old Puna man who was reported missing. Douglas Vernon Don is described as 6-feet, weighing 135 pounds with a slim build, having green eyes and brown hair. He is known to frequent the lower Puna area and was last heard from on Friday,(December 23).

During the week of December 18, 2017, through December 24, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 1,135 DUI arrests compared with 1,088 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.

Police investigate theft of vehicle in North Kohala

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the theft of a Land Pride utility vehicle in North Kohala. According to police, the theft occurred between Friday, (December 22), at 5:00 p.m., and Tuesday, (December 26), at 8:15 a.m. Suspect(s) entered onto the property at Kohala Plants nursery and stole the vehicle which was parked under a tent.

One-way traffic next to St. Joseph Church Sunday and Monday (Dec 24 & 25)

In observance of the 2017 Christmas season activities at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hilo, there will be a temporary one-way traffic pattern on Kapiʻolani Street. Traffic will be allowed only in the Puna, or southerly, direction on Kapiʻolani Street, between Waiānuenue Avenue and Haili Street during certain hours.

Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the body found on December 5th along the Kalapana coastline in Puna.

The victim was identified by dental records as 61 year-old Michael Clay Hughes who had no permanent address.

On December 5, 2017, officers responded to the Kalapana Gardens area after a hiker discovered a decomposing body in a remote location along the coastline.  Detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene, but due to darkness and limited accessibility to the area, patrol officers secured the scene until the following morning.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a home invasion that occurred in Puna on Monday evening (December 18).

At 11:31 p.m. police responded to a Kahukai Street address in the Leilani Estates Subdivision for a reported assault.  The victim, a 34 year-old man who lives at the residence, told police that he heard voices and saw the headlights of a vehicle in his driveway.  When he went out to the front yard to see who they were, he was immediately attacked by two unidentified men who repeatedly struck him in the face and head.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating the theft of chainsaws and other equipment in North Kohala.

The theft occurred between Tuesday, (December 19), at 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday,(December 20) at 8:00 a.m.

Suspects entered a locked tool storage at the Kohala Plants Nursery and stole four chainsaws, a Stihl 25, 18”, Stihl 26-22”, Echo CS340-14”, and Echo CS341-14”.  They also took a cordless Milwaukee Sawzall, 18V Dewalt drill, and driver and an Electric Winch.

A Pāhoa man arrested Tuesday afternoon, (December 19), in connection with a hostage situation in Puna was flown to an Oʻahu hospital for additional treatment of his injuries.

At 5:39 a.m., that morning, police responded to a report of a shooting on Nohea Street in the Leilani Estates Subdivision. Officers located the victim, a 25-year-old Keaʻau man, on the side of the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

Hostage incident ends in Puna with the arrest of a 33-year-old Leilani man.

A hostage standoff in Leilani Estates ended just after 2 p.m. after the suspect emerged from the residence he barricaded himself in since early this morning. After coming out of the home, the suspect shot himself in the facial area with a rifle. Medics were on scene and he was immediately transported to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment. The suspect has been identified as Jovin Chang of Leilani Estates.
