Twelve persons were arrested Thursday (April 2) after blocking access to construction workers who were en route to the summit of Mauna Kea to begin work on the Thirty-Meter Telescope.

“During the arrests, our officers practiced the Hawaiʻi Police Department’s core value of compassion,” said Assistant Chief Henry Tavares, who oversees police operations in East Hawaiʻi.

Snow and 105 mph winds trigger winter and wind advisories for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory and high wind warning for Big Island summits until 6 p.m. this evening (March 9). Snow and ice accumulations along with freezing fog will deposit up to one inch of new snow on Big Island summits over 12,500 feet in elevation.

High wind warning for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea until 6 a.m. Monday (March 9). Winds are coming from the west at 45-70 mph with localized gusts over 90 mph. The strongest winds are expected to be Sunday day and night.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for Big Island summits until 6 a.m. Wednesday (Jan 7). Winds are coming from the northwest to north at 35-50 mph with localized gusts near 60 mph. Winds will be strongest over the highest elevations and summit peaks mainly above 11,000 feet.
