ASTORIA, Ore. – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a crewmember from a U.S. Navy submarine off the coast of Washington, Tuesday (Sept 29). The Navy contacted the Coast Guard at 5:50 p.m. to request assistance in transferring a crewmember to a hospital from a submarine. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Ore., launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to assist. The rescue helicopter arrived on scene at 7:12 p.m. and hoisted the crewmember by basket from the sail of the submarine. Awesome group of men and women at Air Station Astoria. We fish at the mouth of Columbia and just offshore in the Pacific and feel a great deal of comfort when we see the helo's on patrol. Let me tell you, when it's a rescue or the call comes in – they scramble and launch with great speed, regardless the weather. We were out the day an Air Guard jet crashed in the ocean. We were unaware what had happened but saw the the helo's streak out and then C130's take off, angle up, motors trailing smoke – they were pouring the coals to it. When you look at the distance from Astoria – out two hours, then back to Portland, over the coast range (or along the Columbia River) – the helo was moving !
