Crash sends car teetering on the edge of Hilo Bay Tuesday (Sept 13)

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday (Sept 13) Hilo’s Bayfront Highway was closed to traffic in the north bound lanes due to a crash that sent a car over the side of the shoreline of Hilo Bay teetering on the edge.

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 8:45 a.m. alarm Tuesday (Sept 13) to Ling’s Chop Suey House in Hilo for a kitchen fire. He is described as 5-foot-3, 120 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. Police ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Hawai‘i Electric Light Company announces a partial lane closure along sections of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) from just south of Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a (23-mile marker) to Makalei Golf Course (32-mile marker) from mid-September through December 2016. The closure will allow crews to upgrade transmission lines and equipment to improve system reliability.

Police locate man wanted in sexual assault case

Hawaiʻi Island police have located 30-year-old Joshua Corbin, who was wanted for sexual assault and traffic incidents. He was arrested in Hilo at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday (September 13). He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Juvenile Aid Section, which is responsible for investigating sexual assaults, continue the investigation.

During the week of September 5, 2016, through September 11, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 30 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 750 DUI arrests compared with 736 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.9 percent.
