Scenic Byway Program open house (Nov. 5)

When and Where: 4-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel

What: Free open house hosted by Kailua Village Business Improvement District to share information and to learn more about the Alii Drive Scenic Byway Program.

A Scenic Byways Program was established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has funded 2,832 projects for state and nationally designated byway routes.

The vision of the program was “To create a distinctive collection of American roads and treasured places, to record their stories and to recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States”

By definition a “Scenic Byway” is a section of road containing one or more archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

Recently, Alii Drive was officially recognized by the state of Hawaii as a State Scenic Byway – come and learn why, and what this means to Kona’s preservation.
