Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested three men for an assault that occurred Thursday evening (August 24), in Hilo. 

At 7:18 p.m., police responded to a report of a 26-year-old Hilo man being punched and kicked by several men as the victim sat in his truck in front of a Pūnāwai Street residence in Hilo. The victim told police that he was also struck with a wrench by one of the suspects, all of whom later fled in a van before police arrived.

A 39-year-old Pāhoa man died following a 2-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon (August 24), in Pāhoa. 

He was identified as Ernest Jackson. 

Responding to a 2:52 p.m., call, police determined that a 1991 Nissan pickup that was traveling south on Highway 130, failed to yield the right-of-way, making a left hand turn onto Highway 132 and was broadsided by a 1996 Yamaha motorcycle that was traveling north bound on Highway 130, through the intersection.

During the week of August 14- August 20, 2017, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 727 DUI arrests compared with 666 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.2 percent.

A 71-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was involved in a two-vehicle traffic casualty on (August 17), on Highway 190 at the 33-mile marker in Kailua-Kona.

She has been positively identified as Bernadette Chock.

Responding to a 2:40 p.m. call, police determined that a 2009 Nissan Frontier operated by a 48-year-old Kailua-Kona man had been traveling north on Highway 190 when he crossed left of center and struck head on with a 2007 Honda CR-V being operated by Chock who was traveling south on Highway 190.
