Oliver 'Sonny' Shimaoka

MEDIA RELEASE

Oliver “Sonny” Shimaoka, a long-time Big Island resident, has announced his candidacy for the County Council seat for District 9 (Waimea/Kohala/Waikoloa).

Shimaoka lives in Waimea and is the pastor of New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship.

He has been involved as a community leader for many years. He presently serves as a chaplain with the Hawaii County Police Department and is member of several community boards both in Kona and Waimea.

Shimaoka is also a U.S. Army veteran and served two tours in Vietnam.

“Over the years I have observed conflict and divisiveness among our council members that in my opinion has been harmful for Hawaii County,” Shimaoka said. “My goal is to encourage collaboration within the County Council that will allow us to focus on the needs of our island and provide positive and effective decisions that benefit our residents.”

Shimaoka said he will seek to meet with residents and community groups to hear their concerns and ideas.

Former Big Island Mayor Larry Tanimoto will serve as Shimaoka’s campaign chairman.

Shimaoka and his wife of 40 years, Sharon, have four children and six grandchildren.
