During the week of April 25, 2016, through May 1, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 366 DUI arrests compared with 318 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 475 major accidents so far this year compared with 502 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in seven fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 80 percent for fatal crashes and 42.9 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
