Firefighters struggle to contain Kona brushfire Thursday (July 5)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Firefighters spent a second day Thursday (July 5) struggling to contain the Hina Lani Street brushfire in Kona.

The brushfire is located between Hina Lani Street, Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Hina Lani Housing and is moving in a North-Northeast direction. Attempts to contain the brushfire are being hampered by rough terrain making ground access limited. As of Thursday about 400 acres have been burned.

Aerial water drops by the fire department’s Chopper 2 and Paradise Helicopters are working to slow the spread of the fire on the North and Northeast perimeter. A D9 bulldozer is cutting firebreaks to contain the fire and will be working throughout the night.

Traffic on Hina Lani Street is being detoured through Ane Keohokalole Highway. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
