Hawaii People’s Fund awards 2011 spring grants

MEDIA RELEASE

Together with partial matching funds from Hawaii Community Foundation, Hawaii People’s Fund announces nearly $45,000 in funding to support five Hawaii organizations working for justice and social change.

Rather than addressing symptoms of injustice, these groups are working to alter the root causes of problems and develop stronger, more progressive and equitable systems and policies.

Spring grantees are:
* Hawaii Food Policy Council
* KAHEA: The Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance
* Kokua Legal Services
* Mental Health America of Maui County
* Opio Haku Moolelo

Since 1972, Hawaii People’s Fund, a public foundation for social change, has channeled donor gifts into grant awards for grassroots groups throughout the islands.

Twice a year an activist-advised peer review enables a unique, democratic selection process. As many as 500 volunteer hours go into each grant cycle, reflecting the commitment of the Grantmaking Committee.

Non-profit community-based groups with budgets of $250,000 or less can apply for funding.

The next deadline for proposals is Sept. 1. Updated application information will be posted by July 1.
