Kukuihaele brushfire proves difficult for firefighters

Firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment operators battled a difficult-to-fight brushfire Friday in the eucalyptus forest near Kukuihaele.

Fire crews responded at noon to investigate a sighting of smoke and found the blaze under the canopy of eucalyptus trees making it difficult to find and access. Helicopters were turned back by high winds as houses in the area were evacuated with the fire growing to 5-8 acres in size.

Two helicopters began water drops, but were eventually grounded due to high winds. Two downed trees reportedly blocked Highway 240 and were cleared by residents and state crews.

Bulldozers cut fire breaks around the blaze to contain it as county, volunteer and forestry fire crews fought the fire and worked to protect at least four homes being threatened above Waipio Valley Lookout.

More than two dozen residents were evacuated to Honokaa Gym, but were allowed to return home by 7 p.m.

Crews are continuing to work the fire scene tonight.
