Senators Hirono and Boozman introduce bill to renew support for homeless veterans

The Keeping Our Commitment to Ending Veteran Homelessness Act would renew seven U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and U.S. Department of Labor programs that provide outreach and services to homeless veterans and their families. These programs begin to expire on September 30, 2017, absent Congressional action.

Sen Hirono joins vote on Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act

Today, Senator Mazie K. Hirono joined a unanimous, bipartisan vote in the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee to advance H.R. 203, the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, which would improve access to mental health services and suicide prevention resources for American veterans.

"The Filipino Veterans Family Reunification Act would resolve a seven-decade old issue by creating an exemption from the numerical limitation on immigrant visas granted to the children of WWII Filipino veterans," Senator Akaka said.  "In reuniting these veterans with their families, we will properly honor their World War II service to this nation."

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) joined 13 other Senators in introducing the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011, a bill to help veterans struggling find work and to address the rising unemployment among our nation’s heroes.  With the national unemployment rate among young veterans aged 20-24 at over 27 percent, this bi-partisan bill would require job skills training for separating service members and create new pathways to private sector and federal employment.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery III expansion project is almost complete.

The project includes building a new access road, comfort station, committal shelter, maintenance building, cremains garden and a memorial walkway. For safety reasons, the cemetery will be closed October 28-30, 2009
