However - earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local  tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within  a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a non-expanding  regional tsunami warning for a part of the pacific near the  earthquake. Based on all available data there is no destructive  tsunami threat to hawaii.

However... some coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small  non-destructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents  lasting up to several hours. The estimated time such effects  might begin is 10:51 a.m. HST Saturday, December 25, 2010.

Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. a recorded wave amplitude of 23 cm has been observed at Port Vila, Vanuatu. This is only an initial measurement of the first arriving tsunami wave. Higher wave amplitudes may yet to be observed along coasts near the earthquake epicenter.

Authorities should take appropriate action in response to this possibility. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center will continue to monitor sea level data to determine the extent and severity of the threat.
