The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Warning for south, north and east facing shores of Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Thursday (Aug 6). Surf is forecast to be in the 10-15 foot range.

In anticipation of the heavy rain and wind forecast with the arrival of Tropical Storm Guillermo, all backcountry areas in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will be closed as of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 until it is safe to reopen them. No backcountry permits will be issued until park staff reassess the storm’s impact.

Guillermo has strengthened to Hurricane status according to the National Hurricane Center. The forecast is for Guillermo to remain a hurricane through the beginning of next week.
