Motorists will soon begin seeing an increase in their State motor vehicle registration charges as the result of a new State law. 

The new law passed by the State Legislature this year increases State weight tax rates from .75 cents per pound to 1.75 cents per pound for vehicles that are 4,000 pounds or less.

Any taxpayer who experienced destruction or damage to their real property from the March 11 tsunami should file a claim for remission of real property taxes, Mayor Billy Kenoi announced.

The deadline for filing this claim for tax relief is June 30, 2011, but taxpayers should file their claims as soon as possible.

As a result of improving tax revenue collections for the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, Governor Linda Lingle today announced the Department of Taxation will immediately begin issuing state income tax refunds that were processed during the months of January and February.  The total estimated refunds for taxpayers who filed during this period is approximately $125 million, which represents 60 percent of the $207 million claims to date.  An estimated 143,000 of the 331,000 tax filers – 43 percent – will receive refunds.
