An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in the southwestern Ryukyu Islands, Japan at 3:42 p.m. HAST, Sunday, April 19, 2015. Based on all available data… there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 has occurred southeast of Taiwan at 4:59 p.m. HST. Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. There is a possibility of tsunami action near the epicenter.
