The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Wind Warning for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa above 8,000 feet until 6 a.m. Monday (Feb 6).

Strong winds are being recorded on summit areas with winds from the West at 55-65 mph and gusts up to 85 mph.

A high pressure ridge to the Southwest and a low pressure area to the Northeast are combining to produce the strong winds.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the Winter Weather Advisory for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa until 6 p.m. Wednesday (May 11).

Conditions on the summits are forecast to be freezing rain, snow and freezing fog making traveling to the summit difficult. The Mauna Kea summit access road is closed.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the Winter Weather Advisory for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summit of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Monday (May 9)

Freezing rain and snow are forecast to continue through the evening and the advisory could be extended if conditions don't improve.

As of 8:13 a.m. the road to Mauna Kea summit is reported closed to the public above the Visitor's Information Station due to snow and ice on all summit roads.

A deep layer of moisture moving across the Big Island combined with subfreezing temperatures will result in moderate snowfall across the Big Island summits. Expect snow accumulations near 5 inches over a 24 hour period tonight and Monday at the summits with light amounts Monday night. Snow levels are expected to be 11,500 to 12,000 feet in elevation.
