Cinco de Mayo celebrates the legendary Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in which a Mexican force of 4,500 men faced 6,000 well-trained French soldiers. The battle lasted four hours and ended in a victory for the Mexican army under Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza. Along with Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16, Cinco de Mayo has become a time to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.

During the week of April 27, 2010, through May 3, 2010, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 526 DUI arrests compared with 460 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.

During the week of April 19, 2010, through April 26, 2010, Big Island police arrested 39 motorists for drunk driving. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 499 DUI arrests compared with 415 during the same period last year, an increase of 20.2 percent. There have been 430 major accidents so far this year compared with 542 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.7 percent.

So far this year, there were nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with five during the same period last year, an increase of 80 percent.

During the week of April 12, 2010, through April 18, 2010, Big Island police arrested 32 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 460 DUI arrests compared with 387 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.9 percent. There have been 407 major accidents so far this year compared with 510 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 1,225 DUI arrests compared with 1,219 during the same period last year, an increase [corrected] of 0.5 percent.
