Annual closure of ‘ama ‘ama (striped mullet) season in effect Saturday (Dec 1)

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) reminds the fishing public that the season for ‘ama‘ama (striped mullet) will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 through Sunday, March 31, 2013.

South Hilo patrol officers responded to a 3:09 p.m. report Saturday (August 25) and learned that 37-year-old Ian Tengan of Hilo had been fishing at the water’s edge in an area known as “23 Flats” in Honomu, when he disappeared. Police officers and Fire Department personnel located him face down in the surf.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the re-opening of State marine waters on Thursday, September 1, 2011 for the 2011-2012 bottomfish fishing year. 

The fishing year was closed earlier this year on March 12, 2011 and remained closed through August 31, 2011. Seven bottomfish species were affected by this closure: onaga, ehu, opakapaka, kalekale, gindai, lehi, and the hapu‘upu‘u.
