Fire burns over 1,000 acres near South Point in Ka‘u

Fire/rescue crews answered a 2:31 p.m. alarm Sunday (June 1) to the Ka‘alu‘alu area of South Point for a brushfire. The brushfire originated near Ka‘alu‘alu Bay and was quickly pushed by tradewinds in a Northwest direction. About 1.5 hours after report of the fire the area burned was 421 acres.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, a National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter along with Hawaii County fire department’s Chopper One continued the search for a missing fisherman off South Point Monday (Jan 14).

Over 6,500 HELCO customers lose power after Hawi wind farm trips offline Saturday (Jan 5)

At 7:10 a.m. this morning, Hawi Renewable Development Wind Farm tripped offline, causing power interruptions to approximately 6,542 customers in Pepeekeo, South Point, and various parts of Kona. Additional HELCO generation was started and service to all customers was restored within 3 minutes. The cause of the interruption is still under investigation.

Police seek identity of body found at a campsite in Ka‘u

Big Island police are trying to determine the identity of a body found over the weekend at a secluded Kaʻū beach. Around 10:27 a.m. Saturday (November 3), a boater who landed at Waikini Beach north of South Point reported discovering human remains at a campsite.

Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation in connection with a 29-year-old man whose body was found Monday morning after he was swept out to sea Saturday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Ceasare Moses of Pāhala.

Search for missing fisherman off South Point continues

Fire/rescue crews along with a Coast Guard cutter and aircraft continued their search Sunday morning (June 3) for a fisherman swept into the ocean at South Point in Ka‘u Saturday. The man was hit by a wave while retrieving a fish net Saturday and was last seen 200 yeards off-shore by witnesses.

The fisherman was reported to have been using a 'throw net' and was swept into the ocean by a wave in rough ocean conditions.
