Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:59 a.m. alarm Saturday (July 23) for a structure fire in Kealia, South Kona.

Crews arrived to find a two story home engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the fire under control by 2:30 a.m. and it was declared out at 5:45 a.m.

Mamalahoa Highway in South Kona closed Tuesday morning for vehicle recovery

Highway 11 in South Kona will be closed Tuesday (November 10) near the 93-mile marker from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The closure is to allow a tow truck to retrieve a vehicle from a ravine. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during that time. Police thank the public for their patience and understanding.

A 48-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Tuesday (November 8) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) at the 99-mile-marker in South Kona. 

The driver was identified as Bonifacio Pako Alip, III, of a Kailua-Kona address.

Big Island police have identified the man killed from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday (April 12) on the Hawaii Belt Road near the 91-mile marker in South Kona.

He was identified as 60-year-old Stephen Mellor of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in Ka'Å«.

Mellor was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii today celebrates the opening of its South Kona Clinic on the Big Island with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony and open house attended by business leaders, members, and the general public. The new clinic, located in Kealakekua, is open for appointments beginning November 16 and will initially offer adult primary care.

Big Island police are seeking witnesses to a fatal crash Sunday on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11), .9 miles north of the 87-mile-marker in South Kona.

Responding to a 6:12 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 26-year-old man from Hōnaunau was operating a 2007 Honda two-door sedan and traveling south on Route 11 when he crossed the centerline and collided with a 1999 Saturn four-door sedan traveling north.

Firefighters knocked down three separate brushfires Thursday morning (Feb 11) along Hookena Beach Road.

The alarm was raised shortly after 8 a.m. Crews had the fires under control by 10 a.m. and extinguished by 2 p.m.

About 1 acre was scorched by the fires, which flared up 1/2 mile, 1-1/2 miles and 1-3/4 miles down Hookena Beach Road from Mamalahoa Highway.
