Body found in South Kohala was result of homicide, police identify victim

The human remains found in South Kohala on Monday have been identified through dental records as 37-year-old Robert Keawe Lopaka Ryder of Kailua-Kona, who had been reported missing. Ryder’s family reported on January 17 that they had not heard from him since Thanksgiving 2013.

California woman apparently drowns off Puako Thursday (Nov 15)

A California woman apparently drowned Thursday (November 15) in waters along the South Kohala coast. The woman has been identified as 70-year-old Eileen Melville of Midvalley, California. South Kohala patrol officers responded to Waialea Beach (aka. Beach 69) in Puako after receiving a 12:08 p.m. call reporting an unresponsive snorkeler.

An autopsy has determined that 71-year-old Sokoon Yu of Flour Mound, Texas, died from asphyxia due to near drowning.

Yu was snorkeling with a tour group in waters along the Kohala Coast on June 26, when she became unresponsive.

She was taken to North Kohala Community hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has determined that 50-year-old Paul S. Tsang of San Francisco died from cardiac arrest not from drowning.

Tsang was snorkeling in waters in South Kohala on June 13, when he was found unresponsive.

He was taken to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Department of Water Supply will be conducting a fire hydrant flow test at a hydrant in Waimea on Sunday, July 22, 2012 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. 

The affected area may experience slightly discolored and turbid water for several hours after the test. Customers are advised to refrain from washing clothes and to store a container of water for their drinking needs until the supply of water is restored to normal.

Big Island police are investigating the theft of siding/roofing material in South Kohala.

Some time after Monday (June 11) approximately 400 sheets of iron siding/roofing were removed from the Kawaihae Industrial Area. The value of the material is estimated at more than $50,000. It is described as 24-gauge iron siding/roofing, 24-feet by 4-feet. Some sheets are blue and others are white.

Hamakua man turns himself in, is arrested in sex assault case

On Wednesday (December 28, 2011) during the early morning hours an adult female reported being sexually assaulted at a South Kohala public beach. Big Island police arrested 27-year-old Eagle Adam Tobin of Honokaʻa, for Sexual Assault. Tobin turned himself in to police on January 5. He was released pending further investigation.
