Hawaiʻi Island police remind motorists about the dangers of speeding in a school zone.

During morning and afternoon hours, children and school crossing guards have encountered numerous near misses while crossing in crosswalks fronting elementary schools island wide.

School Crossing Guards are present at most elementary schools to assist with the safe crossing of children, and are trained to temporarily hold traffic until all children have completely crossed the roadway.

Hawaiʻi Island police are reminding motorists that Wednesday (July 29) is the first day of school for some public schools and that on Thursday (July 30), all public schools will be in session.

Motorists should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones, during morning and afternoon hours.

Keonepoko Elementary to reopen for next school year

The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) will begin the planning process to reopen Keonepoko Elementary School in Hawaiian Beaches now that lava is no longer an immediate threat to the area. The planning will also include addressing all of the adjustments made in October 2014 that affected 1,700 students and 300 employees.

Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools put in lockdown Friday (Jan 11)

The campuses of Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools are no longer in lockdown as of 8:38 a.m. Friday (Jan 11). According to campus officials shortly before the start of school at 8 a.m. a fourth grade elementary school student reported that he was chased by a person across a field on campus.
