Earthquakes with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 and 6.8 occurred in the area between Tonga and Samoa at 10:18 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time and another at 10:48 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Based on all available data… there is no tsunami threat from these earthquakes.

The Samoan people are an important part of Hawaii’s multicultural tapestry, and most of us here have close friends or family who are Samoan. Less than 48 hours ago a devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Samoa, leaving over a hundred people dead and thousands more homeless.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center downgraded the tsunami warning to a watch. Beaches on the Big Island are closed Tuesday due to possible surges and unusual currents from the earthquake in Samoa. Beaches will re-open on Wednesday. Click above image to view surge video.
