Red Cross shelters about 200 residents during Tropical Storm Madeline

Nearly 200 residents stayed overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug 30-31) at the 14 Big Island evacuation shelters that were opened by the Hawaii County Civil Defense in partnership with the Hawaii Red Cross. All shelters are currently closed.

Red Cross assists two Big Island families left homeless due to windstorm damage

Red Cross volunteers today assessed the damages brought by the wind storm overnight in Maui and Hawaii counties. In Hawaii County volunteers met with two families whose homes were destroyed in Pahoa and Mountain View and provided them with financial assistance for their immediate emergency needs of food, shelter and clothing.

Hawaii Red Cross recruiting disaster volunteers

The Hawaii Red Cross is recruiting disaster volunteers on the islands of Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai. “A critical piece in preparing our local communities for disasters like Iselle before they occur is having trained volunteers on standby and ready to respond,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, CEO, Hawaii Red Cross.
