The County of Hawai‘i’s HI5 Redemption Centers will resume normal business hours effective April 1, 2011, following the transfer of operations to a new vendor. Business Services Hawaii has been awarded the contract to operate the 10 Certified Redemption Centers located at county transfer stations. We thank you for your patience during the transition.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Health’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch is announcing updated rates for Hawai‘i Deposit Beverage Container redemptions by weight under Hawaii Revised Statutes, Chapter 342G, Part VIII.

Weight rates for segregated containers Certified redemption centers may weigh loads of empty deposit beverage containers and pay out deposits based on weight rates by material type. Consumers may request hand counts of container loads of two hundred (200) or less.

Recycle those glass containers!  The Glass Packaging Institute’s second annual Recycle Glass Week is September 12-18, 2010.

Glass can be recycled endlessly with no loss in quality or purity.  An estimated 80 percent of recovered glass containers are made into new glass bottles. In 2008, 35.6 percent of glass beer and soft drink bottles were recycled and 28 percent of all glass containers nationwide.

Trees ready to be discarded can dropped off at any of the following ten (10) Recycle and Transfer Stations: Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Puako, Honoka‘a, Ka‘auhuhu, Keauhou, Pāhoa, Kea‘au, Waimea and Wai‘ōhinu.
