Two injured swimmers rescued from Wailuku River Saturday (May 20)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:41 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 20) to the Wailuku River near Piihonua Bridge for two injured swimmers in distress. Three swimmers were swept by the river currents over the Piihonua diversion dam into the waters below just above Piihonua Bridge. Two of the swimmers suffered injuries to their legs.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:10 p.m. alarm Thursday (July 23) to Piihonua Bridge to rescue two injured people in a pond at the base of a waterfall.

Crews found a male and female below the falls at the edge of the whitewater who could not get out due to their injuries. The pair were injured in the rapidly moving water by the falls.

Fire/rescue units responded to a 12:20 alarm for a 47 year-old man who slipped off a trail near Piihonua Bridge and fell down a 30 foot embankment breaking both bones in his right leg.

Rescue team stabilized the patient who was then airlifted via the Fire Department's Chopper One helicopter. The man was taken via medic unit to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

Jolene Medeiros, 24, of Hilo was pronounced dead Saturday morning (January 2) from injuries sustained in a shooting on December 30 in Pi'ihonua.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday (January 5).

Detectives have reclassified the case from an attempted murder and suicide to a murder and suicide.

Jolene Medeiros, 24, of Hilo was pronounced dead Saturday morning (January 2) from injuries sustained in a shooting on December 30 in Pi’ihonua.
