Hawai‘i Electric Light has deployed employees to the Leilani Estates area to disconnect power in the areas impacted by the active lava flow. The company continues to work with Hawai‘i County Civil Defense and other agencies to monitor and evaluate the flow. The safety of employees and community is always the top priority.

Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) will be pressure testing one of the plant’s safety valves with nitrogen and only nitrogen. Nearby residents may hear the valve opening and releasing the nitrogen several times until about 1:45 p.m. This is a routine testing procedure. Hawai‘i Electric Light today announced that Ormat has withdrawn from contract negotiations to provide 25 MW of additional geothermal energy on Hawai‘i Island. The negotiations were part of a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, a competitive bidding framework initiated to add lower cost, firm, renewable geothermal energy to the island’s energy portfolio.

The Puna Geothermal Venture plant reported having a steam release from the plant re-injection system at about 7:30 a.m. this morning. The event lasted about one minute and no release of hydrogen sulfide was noted. Emergency crews are on scene and investigating. No actions or evacuations are needed.
