Pepeekeo man arrested in gasoline theft case

A 22-year-old man has been arrested for stealing gasoline from a business. Gasoline was stolen from a warehouse in Pāpaʻikou at 5:30 p.m. Sunday (October 28). A video surveillance camera on the property caught the suspect returning at 11:37 p.m. and attempting to steal gasoline again.

Police are searching for a missing 14 year-old Papaikou boy

Big Island police are searching for a 14-year-old Pāpaʻikou boy who was reported missing. Noah Lautalo was last seen in Hilo on August 24th. He is described as 5-foot-9, 165 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. Police ask that anyone with information about his whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

A 43-year-old Papaikou man died Saturday (May 5) while reportedly picking opihi alone in Onomea.

The victim has been identified as Paul Kaaukai.

At 1:52 p.m. Saturday, Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a body floating in Onomea Bay. When officers arrived, they found Fire Department personnel on shore with the lifeless body.

Kaaukai was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was officially pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.

Due to a scheduled repair now underway, the Pāpa‘ikou Well is down. Department of Water Supply customers in the affected area are now under a Water Conservation status. The Department of Water Supply has activated the Ka‘ie‘ie Well as the back up source until the repairs are complete.

Fire/rescue responded to a 7:36 a.m. alarm Tuesday (Oct 4) to Papaikou near the 7 mile marker for a multiple vehicle crash.

Two sedans, a pickup truck and an 18-wheel tractor-trailer were involved. Five people were injured in the crash with one male refusing treatment, two females and two males were transported to Hilo Medical Center with injuries that were reported to be non-life threatening.

The search for missing fisherman Mitchell Wailani ended Tuesday evening (July 12) after another full day of searching by the Hawaii County Fire Department with no results.

Wailani left Hilo Tuesday (July 5) on a fishing trip and had not been in contact with friends or family since Thursday (July 7). Wailani was reported overdue at 4 p.m.

Fire/rescue units responded to a 9:27 p.m. alarm Sunday night (July 10) to Kawainui Stream near Old Mamalahoa Highway in Pepeekeo for a 43 year-old man who may have been swept away in a flash flood.

Witnesses reported to authorities that the man was last seen in the stream when a flash flood occurred.

Fire Department rescue personnel performed a second day of searching for the operator of a 24 foot boat which ran aground Sunday off Papaikou along the shoreline below Kaoe Road.

Chopper One performed an aerial search three miles North, one mile offshore and South to Hilo Bay. A rescue boat and divers searched waters 500 yards North and South of the grounded vessel along with 200 yards offshore.

Fire/rescue responded to a 5:16 p.m. alarm Saturday (July 9) for a report of a boat in distress off Koae Road in Papaikou.

Upon arrival a fishing boat was found aground on the shoreline with nobody on board. The fire department Chopper One performed an aerial search of the surrounding area while rescue divers performed a search of the vessel, surrounding coastline and waters offshore but did not find anyone.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10 a.m. alarm Monday (May 31) for a capsized 16-18 foot catamaran style boat offshore the Papaikou/Onomea area north of Hilo.

Rescue Chopper One spotted two people hanging onto the hull of the overturned vessel five miles offshore. The fire department rescue boat was dispatched to the scene and brought the people back to Hilo Harbor. The vessel was reported to be unsalvageable at a loss of $5,000.
