County of Hawaii and Hawaiian Earth Recycling reach composting contract agreement

The County of Hawai‘i (County) has rescinded its February 16, 2017 Notice of Termination to Hawaiian Earth Recycling, LLC (HER). Mr. Clyde Kaneshiro, HER’s local principal, together with HER representatives, in cooperation with the Mayor’s Office and County representatives, have reached an agreement in principle, addressing the pricing and operational concerns of the County.

County cancels proposed composting facility in Panaewa

The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has formally withdrawn its Draft Environmental Assessment for a proposed composting facility in Pana‘ewa amid residents’ concerns that the location of the facility would impose adverse impacts on the community. This location for the facility was specifically identified in the Compost Contract.

Tropical Storm Flossie causes power outages in Puna (UPDATE July 29, 2 p.m.)

Hawaii Electric Light Company has announced that fallen trees caused by gusty winds from Tropical Storm Flossie are causing power outages throughout the lower Puna area. At this time, approximately 5,000 customers are without power.
