Downed utility pole and lines shut down highway, leaves Waimea residents without power

Police shut down Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) at Lindsey Road in Waimea so crews could make repairs to a utility pole and lines which came down Sunday afternoon. Police report that as of 7:38 a.m. Monday Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) at Lindsey Road is now open to through traffic in Waimea.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued the high surf warning for the North and East shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Wednesday (March 7).

Rough surf is forecast to be 12-16 feet in height. The rough surf will create dangerous rip currents, waves may splash onto the makai lanes of Bayfront Highway in Hilo, especially around the times of high tide.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will hold a community meeting on Tuesday, August 16, from 12-2 p.m. at the North Hawaiʻi Education and Research Center (NHERC).

The purpose of the meeting is to allow the public to meet the Police Department's command staff and to discuss concerns with the police chief and commanders who oversee police operations in the Hāmākua and North Hilo Districts.
