However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. HOWEVER – EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck New Zealand 19 miles northwest of Christchurch. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center there is not tsunami threat to Hawaii. Earthquakes of this size can generate tsunamis close to the epicenter and people should be aware of this possibility.
