Hawaiʻi Island police are reminding motorists and motorcycle operators about the safe use and operation of motorcycles on our roadways.

According to the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, “Only one person shall ride a motorcycle unless it is designed to carry two people and has the appropriate seat firmly attached. The operator and/or passenger shall sit facing forward and sit astride the seat, with one leg on each side of the motorcycle. Operators shall have both hands on the handlebars.  Passengers shall not ride in a position which would interfere with or obscure the view of the operator.”

A 23-year old man died following a motorcycle crash Wednesday night (June 16) near the 25-mile marker in the Volcano area of Puna.

He has been identified as Ronson Bento of a Volcano address.

Responding to an 8:34 p.m. call, police determined that a 2003 Honda XR100R dirt bike was heading north on Route 11 with no lights on when it struck a southbound 2005 Dodge Caravan that was making a left turn onto Nahelenani Street.

The driver of the van, a 48-year-old Volcano woman, was not injured in the crash.

Motorcycle training classes to be offered at Hawaii Community College in Hilo

Hawai‘i Community College and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) celebrated the completion of a new motorcycle training range on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Motorcycle training courses will be offered at Hawai‘i CC starting in early 2014.

A 32-year-old Utah woman died Monday (October 8) from a motorcycle crash in the area of Akoni Pule Highway at the 28-mile marker.

A 35-year-old Utah man was operating a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling northwest on Akoni Pule Highway with his wife riding on the back, when he swerved to avoid a car that crossed the centerline into his lane.

A 41-year-old Waikoloa man died Sunday (July 15) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash Friday (July 13) on Route 190 in the area of the 17-mile marker in North Kona.

The man was identified as Randall C. Guadiz, of a Waikoloa address.

Fire/rescue responded to a 9:48 p.m. alarm Friday night (July 13) to a motorcycle crash with car near the 17 mile marker of Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190).

Crews found an unresponsive 41 year-old man on the roadway. It was reported that a witness saw the motorcycle rider loose control and struck an oncoming car.

In light of several recent motorcycle fatalities, Traffic Enforcement Unit officers on the Big Island will focus enforcement efforts on unsafe operation of motorcycles, including equipment violations.

According to Sergeant Christopher Gali, who heads the Traffic Enforcement Unit, reckless driving was a factor in three of the four motorcycle fatalities this year. “The purpose of our enforcement effort is to prevent additional tragedies,” Gali said.

A 38-year-old Kona man died early Thursday morning (April 12) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night (April 11) at the intersection of Henry Street and Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.

The victim has been identified as Caleb Wolfson of Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 10:22 p.m. call Wednesday, police determined that Wolfson had been operating a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on Henry Street when he struck a concrete barrier and was ejected from the bike.

The crash occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Route 190 .2 miles north of the 14-mile marker in the South Kohala District.

A motorcyclist died Wednesday morning following a collision with a car on Mamalahoa Highway near Puuanahulu, according to fire officials.

The man apparently hit the rear of the car with his Kawasaki motorcycle and lost control just south of Waikoloa Road, fire official reported. The collision occurred in a construction zone.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:14 p.m. alarm Saturday (June 25) to Waianuenue Avenue, fronting Hilo Union School, for a motorcycle which crashed into a utility pole.

Fire dispatch reports the motorcycle rider lost contro, veered onto the sidewalk, struck a chain-link fence then the utility pole. Rescue crews found the rider 25 feet from the crash scene.
