Results of the 3rd Annual Miloli’i Long Distance canoe race held Saturday (Aug 27) at Milolii. The women and mixed teams paddled 6.6 miles to “Two Stone” and back to the finish line at Milolii with the men’s crews racing 9.2 miles to Kipahoehoe and return to Milolii.

A 44-year-old woman from Kailua-Kona died Sunday (October 23) from injuries she sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Miloliʻi Road, 3.7 miles west of the Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 11) in South Kona.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Karen Alani-Powell of a Kailua-Kona address.

Responding to a 12:04 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the driver was operating a 1987 multi-purpose vehicle and traveling east on Miloliʻi Road when she lost control and ran off the road into a lava field.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:04 a.m. alarm early Sunday morning (Oct 23) to the end of Milolii Road for an SUV crash.

Firefighters found an SUV rolled-over, 20 yards off the road in the lava fields due to a high speed crash. Crews found a woman in her mid 30s to early 40s dead on the ground 25 feet from the SUV apparently ejected from the vehicle.

Firefighters found a two-story oceanfront home on fire. Two engine companies and two tanker units worked to put out the blaze which was under control by 3 a.m. and out at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

Vernon Kahele was last seen on Christmas Day (December 25). He is described as Samoan-Hawaiian, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, 135-150 pounds with dark brown hair and brown eyes.

Big Island police have identified the man killed from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday (April 12) on the Hawaii Belt Road near the 91-mile marker in South Kona.

He was identified as 60-year-old Stephen Mellor of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in Ka'Å«.

Mellor was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday.

Governor Neil Abercrombie tomorrow will visit areas that were damaged by the tsunami that swept through the islands last week.   

Yesterday, Governor Abercrombie renewed his efforts in seeking federal money by signing a supplementary proclamation to expand the State of Disaster Proclamation he signed on Friday.  The proclamation is the first step in the process of seeking and receiving federal funds to recover and rebuild.
