The County of Hawai‘i is pleased to announce that Governor David Ige and the State Department of Transportation have committed $19.5 million in federal (STIP) funds for the Māmalahoa Highway widening project in Waimea.

The current cost of the project is approximately $25 million, and the grant of $19.5 million in Federal Highway Administration Funds will be matched with a required 20%, or approximately $5 million, to be contributed by the County.

UPDATE: Mamalahoa Hwy (Route 190) re-opened after closure due to brushfires Thursday (Jan 5)

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) between the 15 and 33 mile markers is now open. While the majority of the fires have been extinguished, motorists are asked to drive carefully as Hawai’i Fire Department personnel are still working in the area. Thank you.

A 77-year-old Kona woman was killed Thursday (April 19) after being involved in a four-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 190 and Hinalani Street in Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 2:58 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the woman was operating a 2011 Hyundai multi-purpose vehicle and traveling south on Route 190 when she rear-ended a 2006 Toyota four-door sedan being operated by a 34-year-old Waikoloa man.

A motorcyclist died Wednesday morning following a collision with a car on Mamalahoa Highway near Puuanahulu, according to fire officials.

The man apparently hit the rear of the car with his Kawasaki motorcycle and lost control just south of Waikoloa Road, fire official reported. The collision occurred in a construction zone.
