Police locate Laupahoehoe man sought in connection with sexual assault of minor

Big Island police have located 25-year-old Thomas Elijah Cummings IV of Laupāhoehoe, who was being sought. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon (February 28) in Hāmākua on suspicion of continuous sexual assault of a minor. After conferring with prosecutors, detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section released him Thursday morning (March 1) pending further investigation.

Board of Education hears Laupahoehoe Charter School appeals

The Hawai`i Board of Education (BOE) heard two appeals Tuesday (Jan 17) brought by Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School (LCPCS) that challenged the actions of the Charter School Review Panel (CSRP). The Panel had denied an amendment to the school’s implementation plan and proposed delaying the opening of the school by a year.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:55 p.m. alarm Wednesday (April 27) to search for a lost hiker in the Laupahoehoe area.

The male hiker left a hunting station 2.8 miles above the 30 mile marker on Highway 19 at 7 a.m., was unable to find his way back to his vehicle and called 911 for help.

The Hamakua Community Development Plan Steering Committee will be holding its first meeting on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at 5 p.m. at the Laupahoehoe Public Library Humanities Room. The Steering Committee’s purpose is to ensure that the CDP reflects community input to the CDP. Steering Committee meetings are monthly “business” meetings where issues are discussed and decisions are made according to the CDP process.

Fire/rescue units responded to a 4:30 p.m. alarm Thursday (July 15) for a two-story home on fire at 39-3362 Hana Kaluna Camp Road in Laupahoehoe.

Firefighters had trouble attacking one side of the structure fire due to live electrical power lines down at the scene.

The 2,400 square foot home suffered severe damage estimated at $240,000 with $8,000 worth of property saved from the fire.

Laupahoehoe Public & School Library will discontinue its Passport Application Acceptance Service, effective Saturday, October 31, 2009, in order for staff to focus on providing core library services to patrons. Another Big Island library, the Kealakekua Public Library, also discontinued its passport application acceptance service last week.
