Police identify man killed in Keaau crash Monday (May 22)

Police have identified the man who died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Monday (May 22) on Highway 11, merging from the Keaʻau bypass (Highway 130) in Keaʻau. He was identified as 71- year-old Ulysses Guillermo of Hilo.

Vehicle crashes, flips in Keaau pinning and killing driver Monday (May 22)

Crews arrived to find a vehicle flipped onto the driver’s side with the driver partially pinned in the vehicle. The male driver was unresponsive with a weak pulse and a massive head injury.

Keaau Community Center closed for maintenance Wednesday (May 24)

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the Kea’au Community Center will close on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, for maintenance of the facility. It will reopen on Monday, July 10, 2017 when classes are scheduled to begin.

Three swimmers rescued off Keaau Beach after two swept out by currents

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 2:04 p.m. alarm Saturday (March 25) to Keaau Beach (aka Shipman Beach, Haena Beach) for three swimmers in distress about 100-150 yards offshore. Two girls had been swept out into the ocean due to a current and a man went into the ocean to assist them.
