A 17-year-old male student was arrested Tuesday (April 28) following a temporary lockdown at Keaʻau High School.

In response to a 10:19 a.m. call, Puna Patrol officers responded to Keaʻau High School. They learned that a 17-year-old boy had physically harassed and threatened school employees who were attempting to detain him after receiving information that he was planning to fight with another student. The student then fled the campus, triggering the lockdown.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:30 a.m. alarm Thursday (Sept 16) due to a strong odor of propane gas in a room at Building 'H' of Keaau High School.

Upon arrival students had already been evacuated from the two-story classroom building.

Teams of local middle and high school students competed today using underwater robots that they designed and built over the past weeks and months.  At the University of Hawaii at Hilo Student Life Center Pool, students used their underwater robots, known as remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), to navigate the precarious terrain of active undersea volcanoes in a mock setting.

For the fourth year in a row, Keaau High School won the state title for the 6th annual LifeSmarts consumer education competition, which was held Saturday (Feb 20) at the State Capitol Auditorium.

The game-show style competition tested students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.
