Water shut-off in large area of Hilo & Kaumana Sunday (Jan 21)

This is a Civil Defense water shutoff message. The Department of Water Supply reports that portions of the Hilo & Kaūmana area are scheduled for a water service shutoff this Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Due to a watermain repair, customers may experience loss of water or low water pressure.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:45 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Aug 10) to the Wailuku River in Kaumana for a drowning.

Crews arrived to an area in the Upper Wailuku River known to locals as 'Narnia' where they found three people on the river bank. The people said a family member had jumped into the water and had difficulty swimming. They jumped in to rescue him be were not able to hold onto him.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating an early morning shooting Tuesday (December 29) in the upper Kaumana Drive area of Hilo.

Shortly after midnight, police received a 911 call from a 23-year-old Keaʻau man who was a passenger in a late-model black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. He reported that their vehicle was being shot at by occupants of a late-model white four-door sedan as they were driving eastbound on Kaumana Drive. The truck was driven by a 38-year-old Keaʻau man and also occupied by another passenger, a 59-year-old Keaʻau man.

Fire/rescue responded to a 9:08 p.m. alarm Thursday (Dec 3) to 322 Ainako Avenue in Hilo for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming out of the windows of the back bedrooms of a three bedroom home. Firefighters had the fire under control by 9:15 p.m. and out at 9:30 p.m. containing the blaze to the two rear bedrooms.

This is an emergency water main break repair information notice for Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 3:45 p.m.

Due to a water main break in the Kaūmana area of Hilo, a water shut off is now in effect for Water Supply customers in Sunrise Estates, Sunrise Ridge, and Hilo Hillside subdivisions; all subdivisions, side streets, & private roads along Kaūmana Drive from Chong Street down to Pilialoha Street; as well as all services along Chong Street from Na‘auao Street to Lewa Nu‘u Street, including Lawelawe Circle; and Nowelo Street extension (mauka of Komohana Street). Please see the above map for the affected area.

The Department of Water Supply will temporarily shut off water service for central Hilo customers located along Waiānuenue Avenue, Komohana Street, lower Kaumana Drive and most side streets in between.  The shut off is scheduled from 10 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015 (tonight), to 5 a.m. on Saturday (tomorrow), March 7, 2015 to change a broken 16” main valve.
