The Office of Housing and Community Development is currently accepting applications  from individuals interested in residency at the Ainakea Senior Residences in Kapa`au, North Kohala, Hawai`i.  

The Ainakea Senior Residences is a rental project consisting of 30 one-bedroom, one-bath units with complete kitchen and bath facilities.  Each unit includes a refrigerator, an electric range and oven, and solar water heating system.

An 82-year-old Kapaau woman is calling a North Kohala police officer an "angel" for rescuing her 14-year-old dog after it fell down a ravine.

On September 1, Edna Kaleo Mendonca was driving on Kohala Mountain Road when she pulled over to let her dog, Sparky, out for a bathroom break at a scenic lookout.

Sparky, who has been Mendonca's companion since he was a puppy, is blind. While out of the car, he slipped about halfway down a 30-foot gulch.

The Kohala Community Athletic Association, in conjunction with the County Department of Parks and Recreation, is hosting the grand re-opening ceremony of the Hisaoka Gym in North Kohala at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29.

Following opening remarks and blessing by Ilima Moiha, Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi will untie the maile lei.

The event also will include local music and entertainment, food booths, athletic exhibits and a basketball clinic with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.
